A carfully worded book with great characters and brilliant descriptions
It was very intriguing and Anne is a good strong female character (for the time it was set in) . The plot was exciting but the ending was so sad. The atmosphere was mostly lighthearted. I enjoyed reading it immensely. Show more Show less
This book is one of my favourites and I never tire of reading it. Anne Shirley is a lively 11 year old orphan with a big imagination who comes from a misfortunate background and lives in an orphanage until one day her dream comes true: she’s finally going to be adopted. She is delighted until she arrives at Green Gables, the home of siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, and learns that there was a mistake as they wanted a boy, not a girl. Anne is devastated but the Cuthberts end up keeping her, which turns out to be the best decision they have ever made. Anne gets into all sorts of trouble as she grows from a young girl who talks too much and is eager to learn and try new things to an elegant, mature young woman.
I especially liked reading about Anne when she was young and about all the mischief she was involved in. There was a lot of character development in this novel as well, not just Anne but also Marilla and I loved how she changed so many other people and softened them to be ‘kindred spirits’ as she likes to call them. The ending had a sad twist but Anne shows how much she has grown and matured in the way she deals with it.
I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to other readers.
